I teach a variety of courses each with its own unique approach, competency informed learning outcomes and learner interactions. I have transformed and adapted my courses for asynchronous and synchronous delivery, working with technology to enhance the student experience. I am currently exploring hybrid approaches to learning as well as exploring mixed reality interactions with learners as teaching environments adapt to the demands of the world around us.
As a founding faculty of the Master of Digital Media Program at the CDM, I have: mentored and trained new faculty from industry to teach 12-credit digital media based projects with graduate students; iterated on the design and teaching of an interdisciplinary improvisation course adapting activities since 2007 to align learning outcomes with competencies from various creative communities; developed new programs with faculty including an ESL boot camp, a condensed version of the MDM Program for teenagers, an executive blended version of the program, and an internationally targeted IDEA-X innovation course as a pathway for students from China, India and Europe; designed the core project-based pipeline for projects implementing agile methodologies, design thinking and user-centered approaches, visual models for brainstorming, rapid prototyping, and research-backed tools to improve team collaboration; and initiated an Action Research study to understand, document and share the mentoring practices of faculty from various sectors of the digital media industry.
Within UBC’s Department of Theatre & Film in Design & Production, I have: taught sound design courses whose students work on Theatre @ UBC and external live productions; project-based creative courses that integrate students from Arts, Computer Science and Engineering faculties; forged teaching partnerships with UBC Medicine, Law, Journalism, Psychology, Music, Geography, Computer Science and Applied Sciences; created collaborative opportunities between UBC Computer Science and Arts students with MDM graduate students to enhance projects with additional skillsets.
As Faculty in Residence at the EML I have: worked with staff, students and faculty to support the implementation of agile software development pipelines; integrated EML staff within project-based courses; mentored faculty unfamiliar with software development; supervised and secured industry professionals to conduct workshops for students on subjects such as Agile, User Experience design, Unity 3D and Unreal development; led the EML vision committee to expand the brand within UBC; supported the development of satellite labs nationally and internationally; worked with a work/learn hiring committee to define project requirements; acted as an industry liaison to secure partnerships; and reached out to various creative communities to increase student exposure and recruitment opportunities.
