Service extends to creative, teaching, facilitating, supervising, networking, partnership development and administrative contributions with Universities and other organizations.

The MDM Program and UBC

Highlights in the past few years at UBC include : trans-disciplinary collaboration with faculty in service to UBC communities of practice have focused on: 1) service to the department of theatre and film on various committees including EDI, Merit, Head of Department Advisory in addition to securing and negotiating monies to the department from extended learning summer programs; 2) trans-disciplinary collaboration with faculty in residence and program development with staff at the Emerging Media Lab; 3) wider service to the university community on adapting courses to at-a-distance models of teaching and learning during Covid-19 ; 4) forging connections with local and international industry partners in theatre and immersive technologies.

Before and now of the Centre for Digital Media’s MDM Program where I’ve provided service since its inception in 2007: a unique partnership between UBC, SFU, ECUAD, and BCIT.

Highlights

  • Collaborated across Faculties on Provost led workgroups. Learning and Teaching Beyond Covid Workgroup: Learning Technology Tools. Guiding Principles for Fall 2020 Course Adaptations.   • Worked with UBC Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections to support the acquisition of Shakespeare’s First Folio (1623) through the creation of a digitization strategy, donor networks and integrated interdisciplinary research. The First Folio along with accompanying touch table video and AR experience developed with graduates from the MDM Program form part of the exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
  • Represented the MDM program as Acting Director in Japan and China to establish higher education institutional partnerships in order to increase applicant pool, secure top talent, and to advise 3rd and 4th year international students of increasing the potential of successful entry into the program.
  • Demonstrated leadership through institutional outreach for the design and development of six MOU’s between the MDM Program and Chinese Universities (Wuhan, Chinese University of Communication, NCUT, Nanjing, Xi’an, Shenzhen).

  • Supported the restructuring of the MDM program from 24 months to 18 including changes to curricular structure, rubrics, new internship models and core course revisions.
  • Designed and co-taught a blended version of the MDM Program that helped the program transition to remote only for the last 2 years.
  • Developed strategic pathways for graduates to transition into the digital media industry with persistent client communication and yearly client needs analysis.

Communities of Practice

Service to various communities of practice have consisted of support and allyship in the development of workshops, projects and initiatives for: people with disabilities focused on career development within theatre and performance; indigenous artists, teachers and researchers within the unceded territories of the Coast Salish people and; women in games; dance artists representing a broad cultural spectrum (Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian, Japanese, Thai, Indigenous).

  • 2021 Realwheels Theatre Board Member. A theatre company dedicated to persons with disabilities by persons with disabilities. (fundraising, grant writing, digital strategist)
  • SIGGRAPH 2022 VR Theatre, judge. Judge for competitive triage of VR animations to make it into the VR Theatre.
  • World Stage Design, Immersive Technology and Performance co-chair choosing 10 mixed reality and immersive technology works internationally for performance, panel and installation events at World Stage Design 2022.
  • SIGGRAPH VR Theatre, committee member. Review of submissions and recommendations to jury.
